There are six primary HVAC equipment manufacturers in the U.S. today, but they operate under more than 150 brand names. Here are some brands that come off the same manufacturing lines — just different paint, labels, and marketing:

  • Carrier, Payne, Bryant, and Tempstar
  • Lennox, Armstrong, and Concord
  • Trane and American Standard
  • York, Lux, and Coleman
  • Goodman and Amana

How to Choose the Right HVAC Equipment

With 6 manufacturers and 150 HVAC brands, how do you choose the best HVAC brand one for you?

Typically people tend to use the following searches on Google, but that can be frustrating. Each search result and website will show you different answers, different ratings, and so many opinions. How in the world are you supposed to find out which air conditioner or furnace is the best?

  • Best air conditioner
  • Best furnace brand
  • Best HVAC brand
  • Most reliable HVAC brand
  • Most reliable air conditioner brand
  • Most reliable furnace brand

In today’s new age of technology and testing machinery, manufacturers are able to put their product to the test. With custom-weathered labs, manufacturers put their systems under extreme conditions to see what parts will fail under certain circumstances.

So, if most brands are essentially built the same, have similar parts, go through extreme testing requirements, and have the same efficiency, WHAT’S the difference?

HVAC Contractors Make the Difference

The HVAC contractor you hire to install your system is what really matters!

Here are two scenarios of a customer selecting a good HVAC brand, but selecting different HVAC contractors. Of these two customers (A and B), which system do you think will perform the best and last the longest?

Compare HVAC Contractors instead of brand of HVAC equipment

Based on the installation process, Customer B will have better performance and their system will last longer!

Installation of your HVAC equipment cannot be understated. In fact, according to the North Carolina Alternative Energy Corp. 9 out of every 10 systems are not installed properly!

Next time you’re searching for a new HVAC system, try searching “best HVAC contractor”, “best HVAC contractor near me”, “best HVAC companies near me” or “best HVAC service near me”. That should give you better results instead of searching for the best system! Give On the Mark a call today about your HVAC system options!

Here Are the Facts About the Best HVAC Brands

Texas A&M University found that a 23% refrigerant undercharge could result in a 52% efficiency loss. (Essentially DOUBLING operational costs)

Lakeland Electric & Water along with the Florida Solar Energy Center’s researchers found that by repairing leaking ductwork, cooling energy was reduced by an average of 17.4%

North Carolina Alternative Energy Corp. is a non-profit organization that examined air conditioning manufacturers’ efficiencies versus the actual efficiencies that resulted after installation.

  • 90% of the units tested exhibited some sort or energy wasting problem. (9 out of 10 Installations were NOT up to the standards paid for)
  • 50% had an improper refrigerant charge
  • 40% failed to meet minimum air flow criterion. 20% were barely inside the range specified by the manufactures (This means something as simple as a dirty filter ‘kicks’ the system outside of this range)

Additional Info:

  • A deficiency of only 20% in indoor air flow reduces the SEER by 17%
  • A 15% return air leak from a 120 degree attic could reduce a 12 SEER to a 6 SEER!

Pacific Gas & Electric found that the average heating energy for

  1. Repair of disconnected ducts was 15%
  2. Repair of diffuser leakage 7.5%
  3. Correct low air flow 5.6%
  4. Repair leaks and correct refrigerant charge 18.4%

Honeywell found that a typical heat pump would lose almost 50% of its efficiency after 20 years even if a typical “dust stop” filter is installed.

  • In 20 years a 12 SEER would become a 6 SEER if it is not properly maintained. This would double the energy cost!

Louisiana State University and Gulf States Utility found that consumers could save about $30 per month just by making sure that their air conditioning system was cleaned and serviced regularly.

  • LSU determined that without proper air filtration, over time, air flow can be reduced by over 30%
  • Capacity can be restored by over 12%

HVAC manufacturers’  data shows a condensing unit with a SEER of 13 matched with an old air handler would decrease the SEER to 9.2, resulting in less efficiency.
