Start by removing the cover over the outdoor part of your air conditioner. You will probably need to unscrew it and you may need some help lifting or prying it off the coils. Make sure you set your screws aside. Sometimes, these are of a proprietary size and replacing them can be difficult.
Before you touch the inside of your AC unit, make sure it is turned off and that the breaker for it has been flipped. This helps ensure that you won’t get injured or damage the unit. Put on gloves and remove any large debris or debris chunks. Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to gently vacuum off the coils, making sure not to bend any of the fins.
Finally, spray the unit with an AC condenser cleaner. Let this sit for the amount of time prescribed on the bottle, usually 10-15 minutes. Finally, spray off the cleaner and the dirt it is removing with your hose. Use a gentle setting so you don’t bend your fins. When you’re done with this, replace the cover on your AC unit.
Most air conditioners don’t have filters that you clean. Instead, you should change your filter every 1-3 months, especially when you are using your air conditioner a lot. Make sure you get a filter that is the right size and shape as the old one (you can even take it with you when you’re making your purchase). Follow the directions on your furnace to replace it properly.
